So the fun of summer has been and gone and winter is rapidly heading our direction there is nothing for it but to hunker down and make the most of the season. Here is my recipe for a perfect autumn or winter night in!
1) Company
In summer we go out and meet loads of people at parties and pubs and generally have a great time, but by the time the seasons change I feel I want to settle down with just my good friends. Spend hours chatting and putting the worlds to rights. I love welcoming my friends into my home and being the host.
2) A log fire
I have always lived in houses with Log fires, as I got older it became my chore to lay the fires. I can get a nice roaring fire going very quickly. Log fires are perfect for cuddling up in front of, perfect for toasting crumpets or marshmallows and for creating a cosy mood.
3) Candles
Nothing says cosiness quite as much as candle light. This is a habit I have acquired from my father he is forever lighting candles around the place. I don’t mind a scented candle but I am very fussy about the scent. Sandalwood is my favourite. Vanilla is vile, just don’t do it.
4) Music
With a cosy night in a bit of hip Electronica just isn’t going to cut it. This might be naff but I am a fan of a bit of easy listening, some swing or some Rat Pack? But my ultimate cosy night music in is Madeleine Peyroux.
5) A Rug
I live in an old house, it was built in 1630 so doesn’t have double glazing and there are inevitably a few drafts. How to keep chill out? Snuggle under a nice warm Rug of course!
6) Food
Snacks, chocolates or a hearty meal? Well when it gets cold we have to build up our fat reserves to get us through until spring it is only natural isn’t it? (I might be clutching at straws!)
7) Drink
Share a bottle of wine? A glass of Whisky? A Brandy Perhaps? How about a glass of port, I like a nice tawny variety! Well it seems a good plan to me, Cheers!
8) Old Movies
Well whilst we are having a pleasant evening in I think we should watch a good old movie, Casablanca or Brief Encounter perhaps?
9) Chess
My father plays chess very well, I don’t. Never mind that doesn’t stop me enjoying the game and is perfect for whiling away the hours until it is time for bed!
10) Bed
When it finally comes to bed we will need lots of blankest and a thick duvet. Obviously the best way to keep warm is to share it with a big strong man. Now I tend to be very warm when sleeping so I will take on radiator duties, just snuggle in and I’ll look after you!
